study.

Ugh. I am in the middle of studying for my second orgo exam of the semester. I hate it so, so, so much. I know that I could do well in the class if I could actually find enough motivation to actually care, but I just honestly can’t spend my time staring at flashcards of such worthless information. I am at a particularly low point at the moment. I just feel like I am writing stupid reaction after stupid reaction, forming page after page of lines and dots and arrows that will never really mean anything at all.

I think that this is definitely a time for one of Kateryn’s “Good Shit” lists…

1. Today was Beatles day in my History of Rock class! Lots of fun! :)

2. Harriet (the monkey that I work with in the Neuro lab) wasn’t a devil monkey today! Lately she’s been really feisty and has even come close to scratching me, which has been turning my weekly visits to the lab into a very stressful experience. Today, though, I put her in a smaller chair that gives her no space for reaching me and everything went smoothly! That was a relief.

3. In Women’s Group we’re singing “Hit Me With Your Best Shot,” and I really like it. I especially like that I get to sing the contralto part, so I’m belting out my best man-voice. Yesss.

4. I think I did well on the Mental Disorders test that I had this morning! I really like this class. I think I really enjoy classes like this that focus on the clinical aspects of neuroscience. I like seeing how things on a molecular level are relevant to human experiences like learning, memory, emotions, etc. When there aren’t any people involved, I get bored…(*cough* orgo *cough*).

5. This isn’t from today, but I had a really nice weekend! Casey and I went shopping on Friday. Valentine’s Day with Sam was absolutely perfect. Before too long, it’ll be time for spring break, which means Tour with the choir, which means a ton of fun. When I think about the big picture of my life like this, I guess orgo is pretty much the only thing  isn’t wonderful…so I suppose I can quit whining about these stupid flashcards and get back to studying…wish me luck!

sunshine!

Yesterday was beautiful. It was that first day of warm weather that has some kind of strange, magical effect on all of campus, causing everyone to behave like an eight-year-old at recess. I love it! Alumni Lawn was packed with frisbee players and sunbathers, and one group of people had even constructed a makeshift hammock in some nearby trees! I don’t think anything can go wrong on a day like that. Casey and I commented on how it kind of felt like we were living on a hippie commune or something.

Speaking of hippies, yesterday I made friends with a woman named Sheila who works at Nectar, the organic food store on campus. She has dreadlocks and always wears really cool bandanas over her hair. I’d seen her before, but yesterday, after she politely warned me that the almond butter that I was about to purchase would set me back a ridiculous $20, we ended up having a really nice talk and I introduced myself. She told me that when she was young, she used to have an imaginary friend named Angie! Weird. We also talked about  how she has a theory that we are overpopulating the earth, and that the horrible diseases that plague humankind are the result of nature fighting back. Anyway, it was the kind of random conversations in life that I really enjoy. It makes me happy to know that you just might meet a really cool person anywhere you go, and when you least suspect it.

great day!

It’s only 3:30 pm and this day has already been more perfect than I could have ever imagined!

  • The weather is absolutely perfect: 60 degrees and sunny. I wore flip flops!
  • Bruegger’s was serving their delicious butternut squash soup that I have been craving for a year!
  • On a whim, I decided to check out Ticketmaster…I found out that Flight of the Conchords is coming to Nashville in April!!!!!!! Tickets go on sale this week! (Also, looking ahead, the concert is on April 10th and I have absolutely nothing on my calendar for the following week…and the next weekend is Rites of Spring!)
  • Casey bought Mario Kart for her Wii!
  • I don’t have any tests this week, so once I finish my bio lab I can just relax and enjoy the rest of this wonderful day! :)
